Sharing Economy

On the web, the person-to-person model started with eBay in 1995. Twenty years later, it remains an important online platform. Over the years, eBay has influenced many of the person-to-person models that are in play today. Craigslist came on the scene in the late 1990’s.  In 2000, Zipcar’s fleet entered the marketplace, and Airbnb took off in 2007.  Then, people really started to take notice when Rachel Botsman coined the term ‘collaborative consumption’ in her 2010 book -“What's Mine Is Yours: The Rise of Collaborative Consumption”.

Sharing is not a new concept. We've been bartering and collaborating since the beginning of time. When we didn't have money, we traded goods and services.  People felt safe bartering and collaborating because they knew their neighbors and had a personal, human connection.

Today, collaborative consumption is the reinvention of old market behaviors that are really taking off due to modern technology.  Online social networks and electronics offer an easy connection that enables and supports shifting behaviors from owning to sharing anything and everything in a virtual and real world, creating  ‘we-commerce’ opportunities.

In a 2013 poll (Washington Post-Miller Center poll), 73%of Americans said they were dissatisfied with the economy. Lower income Americans are more financially insecure than they've been since the 1970s, with 85% worrying how they would pay their bills. According to the American Psychological Association, a quarter of Americans say they don't trust the companies they work for, and the number of independent workers has risen 10% since 2011.

Many people aren't satisfied with the current system, which opens a big window of opportunity for the person-to-person economy.  Even though the rise of online person-to-person services can create jealousy and competition within a more ‘traditional’ marketplace, the ‘sharing economy’ is rapidly expanding, is transforming social and economic practices, and is here to stay.

As a social, person-to-person, collaborative network, TrikleTrade coordinates community-based online services connecting people. Although we are a part of the collaborative consumption as scene in a sharing economy, we take it one step further and operate under a gifting economy. Members register and create a personalized profile with content and pictures.  The more content, the more members will want to connect.

There are many ways to collaborate with TrikleTrade members and gift forward.  Click on the Pay it Forward tab and search your area for people who have posted a request or click on a specific topic, like ‘child care’ and view all the requests for that topic across the country.  To answer a request, click on the listing title and contact the TrikleTrade member by ‘asking a question’.   If you need help, create a listing and post it to the site.  Once someone answers your request and the gifting is complete, we simply ask that you pay forward your experience to another member and fulfill his or her request when appropriate.

We encourage you to join us.  The functionality of gifting is what brings people in, however it’s the community we connect with, which keeps us engaged.
